Lu Chao (b. 1988 in Shenyang, China) currently lives and works between London and Shanghai. He completed his Masters at the painting department of the Royal College of Art in London, UK and his Bachelor at the Central Academy of Fine Arts oil painting department in Beijing, China.
Lu Chao is a profound admirer of both traditional Chinese thinking and Western philosophy. In particular, his interest in Socratic paradox – I know that I know nothing – is the conceptual basis for his oeuvre. Through his paintings, Lu Chao exposes us to the unknown and strangeness of life, of the world and of the human state of mind. We find it difficult to truly understand our own persona, and even more exhausting to comprehend the world around us. The gap between what we do and what we do not know shapes the beauty and excitements of life.
